A Touching Video from Relief Efforts

Akira Sasaki and a band of volunteers went to a remote island — largely forgotten from Federal relief — to provide hot meals and plenty of smiles to people’s faces. Take a few minutes to see what your donations and positive energy have done… THANK YOU. share with your friends Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this post

One Love – People Helping People

It’s hard to live in today’s world and not notice many hair-raising, blood-boiling things going on. Whether it’s wars, bombings, nuclear power plants melting down and resulting environmental problems, a changing global climate, petty political bickering and power grabbing in our national debates, and on and on… Then every so often, I am moved to the core by some of the beautiful things humanity is capable of. Watching this photo slideshow of Akira, his volunteers, farmers who donated crops, ferry boat operators, the destruction from whence they came and the hope and...

Mission Success [VIDEO]

Akira and his team of volunteers have the first round of relief work under their belts and the goal of not only feeding hungry people, but also putting smiles on their faces is accomplished. I won’t say too much more, except: watch this video. Yes, it’s in Japanese, but I think the images are universally translatable. share with your friends Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this post

Live Video from the Relief Effort

Akira and his team of volunteers are now on Katsura Island cooking as we write this. The video below shows the team taking delivery of food and supplies form all over Japan and loading it on the skiff. Many prefectures in Japan have been graciously donating food and the volunteers have been collecting utensils, pots and pans. When I see this video, I realize just how much bigger this whole mission has become than any one individual. World Cup skiers, from Alpine to cross country, skier cross to biathlon, organizers, Japanese farmers, administrators, bookkeepers, and most of all donors like...

We are Grateful to Didier Cuche

Skiers Helping Japan and the beneficiaries of his generous donation thank Didier Cuche! Didier donated $17,000 and will be used for the first round of relief efforts  in a small, forgotten island that has been largely forgotten by national relief. Katsura Island was leveled in the March earthquake and tsunami and still has thousands of people in shelters without basic necessities. Akira and his team of volunteers will be heading out there June on the 13th and 14th to cook for the population. We will post photos of the relief effort when they become available. Didier: THANK YOU! View Japan...

Japan Radiation Dispersal Model

The German Federal Weather Service has provided the following map illustrating a time lapse image of the radiation dispersal from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant. The picture animation in 6-hourly time steps (please click picture below) shows the possible migration of radioactively load air at the point of the nuclear power station Fukushima I in 250m height for three days. IMPORTANT NOTE: Since the strength of the emission is unknown, the values are to interpret only as relative distribution and dilution outgoing from an unknown source concentration. A conclusion on the actually radioactive load...

Akira Update April 9th, 2011

Dear Skiers Helping Japan: 2 weeks ago I was in the Tohoku area to bring a load of winter jackets to the shelter and to see the devastation with my own eyes. I have never seen anything like that in my life. I was at a true loss for words. As you know, the reports say we lost 11,000 and 22,000 people are missing. Looking at the piles or wreckage, makes me realize that we probably won’t find most of those 22,000. They are just gone. Surprisingly, with so much death and destruction, the people there were actually optimistic about the future. They were talking about eventually leaving the...
